We took a brief trip to our nation’s capital before heading to the beach. Hermela enjoyed her time with her family, but had no real understanding of our government or the significance of our sightseeing stops! :)
The Metro was a highlight for the younger ones.
We started off trying to find a quick dinner and then on to DC By Foot. A walking tour of the monuments and memorials of the National Mall. This started our “22 miles in a day and a half adventure!” :)
The “sharp shooter” on top of the White House, that our guide pointed out, was a cool sight for the kids too!
Many of the monuments and memorials were exciting as well as emotional to see as a family.
The next day began with a walk through Arlington National Cemetery.
What an impressive sight to see the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier!
My mom would always tell me that she remembers sitting on the couch nursing me (born just a couple of weeks earlier)when she heard of Kennedy’s assassination.

Off to a picnic lunch on the grass of the Capital Building!
We were told by one of the door guards that our snacks and water could not be brought in to the Capital Building. As we tried to figure out who would go in and who would wait outside, another woman came over and told us to go to our representative’s office and ask if they’d watch our backpacks AND to ask for a “backdoor pass” to the House of Representatives Building!!
After a full day of walking in the heat of DC, we were pushing it to try for one more family shot in front of the White House! Little Sis(and the rest of the gang) was ready to go back to the hotel …
wake up the next morning…AND HEAD TO THE BEACH!!
